The Danube divides two cities that were never meant to be one. Buda and Pest merged only in 1873, and the river between them remains the seam. What the water offers is an angle no street provides. The embankments themselves carry UNESCO World Heritage designation, granted in 1987 and extended in 2002 to include Andrássy Avenue.
